Withania (Withania somnifera) is an Ayurvedic herb which is also known as Ashwagandha, Indian Ginseng, and Winter Cherry. It is considered a nourishing and rebuilding herb for all major life stages. The use of the herb is ancient, and it is still used in the same way today as it has been for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. The Latin species named somnifera translates to “sleep-inducing”, which remains consistent with its modern uses as a sleep aid, and to calm a busy mind.
It was used traditionally to give vitality and strength in an exhausted nervous system whilst simultaneously calming the spirit of stress and over-stimulation. It is a key herb considered for the “tired but wired” individual when feelings of fatigue and exhaustion are high, but sleep proves to be illusive.
As an adaptogen, it is used to support stress, anxiety and low mood. It may improve physical and mental performance and endurance in periods of high demand with limited time for recovery.
Traditional uses include:
To ease tension and weariness
As a non-stimulating tonic
To soothe and rejuvenate frayed nerves
To restore calm and resilience
To promote restorative sleep
To support convalescence
To enhance energy levels
As a rejuvenating tonic and longevity tonic
To relieve feelings of general unwellness or debility
